Basic Nutrition for active individuals:
FUEL THE ANIMAL INSIDE
I once had a customer who asked me why he wasn’t able to perform in his workout multiple days in a row. I learned that because he was trying to lose weight, he thought that skipping breakfast made sense after completing his workout. The thing is, if you don’t give back to your body the materials it needs to repair, it’s going to pull them from place you don’t want it to, leaving you more fatigued. However, if you replenish your body’s nutrients after exercising (preferable no later than a half hour following), then your body can repair and bounce back for another great workout the next day. Through regular exercise, your body will become more efficient at burning fat and building muscle.
So, moral of the story? You need to fuel the animal if you want it to keep running. The best solution is to have a diet from a variety of foods, adequate calories, and find that balance of giving your body enough but not over doing it.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that you fill your diet with fruits, vegetables, protein, dairy, grains and oils. It also recommends limiting saturated fats, trans fats, added sugars, and sodium. For more specific advice on what is best for you and your active life goals, we recommend you speak with a dietician.
