Initial Fit

New Balance 860After slipping into a pair of NB 860’s, I experienced a very nice fit.  The top box was roomy and round-shaped enough for my 4th toe, which sometimes gets a little too close to the end in some shoe lines.  The fit through the arch and instep was snug and gave me the feeling that this shoe would be moving closely with my foot.  The heel was just roomy enough to give a snug fit, but not too tight.   I didn’t feel any pressure points anywhere.  I could feel decent-but-firm cushioning under my forefoot and heel.  The higher-density stability support is placed under the shoe so that it begins to provide the added support early-ish in the heel strike and carries on through mid-late portion of the stride.  It should be ideal for a medium or even a medium-plus pronator.

Running

In action, the 860 lived up to the initial fit.  The grip around the arch held the shoe firmly in place, while not making it seem like it was strangling your foot.  The support did it’s job and kept my pronating feet in check.  For my particular feet, I tend to like late-stage pronation control in a shoe, but these provided enough late stage support that they worked for me.    Important to me is the support the shoe gives to the outside of the heel during initial heel strike.  Some brands of shoes are very soft on the outside which makes my foot tip out initially, leading to excessive motion.   This one is appropriately firm.  The shoe moves well with my foot and was comfortable throughout my miles.  I did notice the 860 seemed wrap my foot more than previous models, but the fit was still roomy and very even and there were no pressure points.

Conclusion

I like this shoe, and look forward to wearing it on my long training runs.

It will be a great long distance trainer for someone with low to medium arches looking for good stability and cushioning in a roomy shoe.
